There are several well-known dishes and delicacies in Alaska that locals love and tourists search for. From Alaska’s famous fresh salmon and king crab legs to our ripe, wild berries, it’s impossible to run out of awesome dishes to try here in Alaska.
1. Reindeer Dogs
Reindeer Dogs are truly the infamous Alaskan street food, even though you can now buy reindeer sausages in most states. We suggest trying the “sled dogs” when you visit Carcoss, specifically at the Authentic Sourdough Bakery. This Reindeer Dog is baked and wrapped in sourdough.
2. Smoked Salmon Anything and Everything
We all know salmon in Alaska is fresh, mouthwatering, and very incredibly popular. But today, one can get salmon anywhere, so we suggest trying something different and going for a smoked salmon chowder bowl at Gwin’s Restaurant in Cooper Landing. Amazing flavors!
3. Black Cod
You cannot even begin to imagine what your missing if you haven’t tried this fish. Fresh Black Cod is incredibly delicious; we suggest going to J-Dock Seafood Company in Seward. It is served grilled to perfection after a marinate of soy sauce and lemon juice.
4. Chocolate Bread – Dark Chocolate Chunk Filled
You must try any baked good at Two Sisters Bakery in Homer (but particularly the dark chocolate chunk filled Chocolate Bread). This is truly an iconic Alaskan food experience. Just Incredible.
5. Gumbo
Yes… Believe it or not, Alaska has some of the best gumbo in the world. We suggest trying the Gumbo at the infamous Double Muskie in Girdwood.
6. Any fresh jam or dessert with berries
We have millions of decadent wild berries in Alaska. We have everything from wild blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, blackberries, and much MORE. Definitely order something “berry,” and we would like you to try High Bush Cranberry Jam or any wild berry cobbler.
7. Crab… HELLO!
Fresh King and Dungeness Crab is our area of expertise in Alaska. But if you want the best of the best, then there is only one place to go… Tracy’s King Crab Shack on the docks of Juneau. Incredible waterfront dining and insane crab legs!
8. Eskimo Ice Cream
A real Alaskan treat that few get the opportunity to enjoy is called “Eskimo Ice Cream,” or more accurately, “Aqutak” or “Agutuk.” It is about as Alaskan as you can get in the dessert category. To make this dish you whip together seal oil, reindeer (and any other animals) fat, snow and wild Alaskan berries.
9. Muktuk
Another native favorite is Muktuk, it’s the combination of whale blubber and skin frozen together and eaten raw.
10. Any other wild game!
